The University offers higher doctorates in Literature primarily designed for graduates of the University who have subsequently published original work that has over a period given them authoritative international standing in their filed. The Doctor of Literature is awarded as recognition of real distinction in the field of Literature and is awarded for an original contribution(s) of special excellence to linguistics, literary, philosophical, social or historical knowledge. It is awarded only on work, whether sole or conjoint, published in book form or in scholarly journals in general circulation.

Students with a strong background in two (or more) literatures who wish to undertake a PhD thesis in this field should contact the Postgraduate Services or the relevant Department for advice on the formulation of a project and the securing of possible supervisors. Candidates intending to submit for examination are advised to obtain the note Guidance for Candidates from the Registrar, The University of Auckland, before submitting.
