Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, with 1.3 million people.

The Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) prepares graduates for a broad range of health-related careers. Drawing together the faculties of Medical and Health Sciences, Law, Arts, Commerce and Science, the BHSc provides a multidisciplinary understanding of medicine and health care in New Zealand.

The BHSc is a non-clinical programme of study which provides students with an understanding of the biological, social and behavioural bases of the western medical system as preparation for a career in the health sector and related industries. The programme focuses upon the health of populations, considering issues such as the socio-economic and behavioural factors affecting health and health provision; the role governments play in determining health policy; how health systems function, and the biological and social bases of ill-health in our communities. Topics in human biology, the mechanisms of disease, health care ethics, Maori and Pacific health, sociology and health informatics support these subject areas.

For some students, the BHSc may provide an entry path to a career in the health professions as some BHSc students may be eligible to apply for entry to the Faculty's medicine, nursing or pharmacy programmes at the end of their first year of health science study. The BHSc may also be used as a basic qualification leading to graduate study in public health, health science or health management.
