Age: 20+
Locations: Dunedin - Coastal Otago

Chaichana Pairum’s New Zealand education began when he was 15 years old, with secondary schooling at Kaikora Valley College in Dunedin. At first it was somewhat a “culture shock”, and he found English difficult. However after only a few months, Chaichana became more comfortable with using English – due to the effort he made to speak with New Zealanders, resulting in great friendships. Chaichana’s New Zealand friends helped him to correct his grammar and encouraged him to use new words. “Once I had the confidence to speak English I could face the world and take on new challenges.”
Once his secondary schooling was completed, Chaichana decided to remain in New Zealand for his tertiary education, enrolling initially in the University of Otago’s Foundation Year programme. Foundation Year gave Chaichana the opportunity to learn about different cultures, and he has enjoyed making friends with people from Fiji, Tonga, China, Japan and Papua New Guinea. “The network of people from different countries helps me achieve my career goals and I have made long-term friendships.”
Students in New Zealand are encouraged to think innovatively and participate actively in class. The teachers at Foundation Year encouraged Chaichana to ask any questions and he found the workload reasonable. Most importantly, “the Foundation Year helped me to prepare for university study. It has been a once in a lifetime opportunity to come to Dunedin and study at Foundation Year.”
Chaichana successfully graduated from Foundation Year and has now begun study for a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Food Science, at the University of Otago.
In addition to Otago’s study environment, Chaichana is enjoying the many recreational opportunities that are part of the New Zealand lifestyle. “There are many things to do especially if you like sport- rock climbing, gyms, and beaches. I play basketball for a Dunedin club.”
Upon completion of his international qualifications, Chiachana plans to return to Thailand and embark on his chosen career to manage a food manufacturing business.
Dunedin is the main centre of the Otago Region, in New Zealand’s south.
