A Bachelor of Science graduate from the Thammasat University in Thailand, Warawan Chalermot has developed her career in environmental management. "After finishing my first degree, I first worked as a research analyst. I then got a job with the Pollution Control Department as an Environmental Officer.
Warawan worked for the Pollution Control Department for seven years before making the decision to continue her education. "Thailand since the early 90's has received pressure both from the local public and international community to push for environmental issues. As I always wanted to learn more in my field, I first went for a three month training course at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom." After another three years with the Pollution Control Department, Warawan continued to seek further education. Her manager recommended the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, endorsed by recommendations from friends and colleagues. "I saw an interview with a Thai Minister and his family, and they had lots of good things to say about Christchurch. His son was also studying at the University of Canterbury."
With support from a NZAID scholarship, once in New Zealand Warawan's expectations were validated. "What's good about Engineering at this university is the creative ways of learning. There are many activities that are very hands on and require teamwork. Staff are very helpful and supportive and access to university facilities is very easy." Enrolling for a Master of Engineering, Warawan's research looked at particular pollutants and chemicals, and the impact this might have on health. She also developed her Academic Writing skills. In addition to her studies, in 2002 she chaired the organising committee for "The First Conference of NZAID Scholar: Research and Education for Development". She also helped organise the International Conference for her department.
Warawan has now returned to Bangkok and continued her work at the Pollution Control Department, where she directly applies the benefits of her Masters study. "My New Zealand education gave me a great opportunity to meet people from several research sectors. This has created a new professional network for my career, which needs multi-discipline counsel. My English skills are really helpful given the global cooperation in environmental management with both information and technology. Most of all, the new ideas I experienced in New Zealand now expedite my task processing."
