Investing in Nelson’s Arts Reputation
Friday, 25 July 2008
The beautiful city of Nelson has long held a reputation as a centre of New Zealand's arts scene. Now the government has confirmed that by providing $8.1 million to fund a new Arts and Media building at the Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology.
(via The Press, Christchurch) Prime Minister Helen Clark said at a packed NMIT student centre yesterday that the institute was in the middle of a $25m redevelopment programme.
The new arts and media building will eventually house students of the institute's new diploma course, which starts next year.
Its new Maori-teaching building has opened, and the tourism and hospitality complex is due to open later this year.
Nelson was regarded as a centre of arts and culture, and its talent in the field had to be nurtured, said Clark.
The challenge for New Zealand was to get young people involved in all forms of education so the country had a workforce capable of functioning in tomorrow's knowledge-based economy, she said.
NMIT chief executive Tony Gray said the Government funding was significant and would enable the institute to provide technical and multi-media courses, which were vital for the social and cultural development of the growing region.
