Kiwi Culture and Adrenaline Adventures

Wednesday, 17 June 2009

It was hard to tear the Kiwi IQ winners away from Auckland where they were having an awesome time, but once they realized what the rest of New Zealand had in store for them they knew this was going to be a day to remember.

First stop was the city of Hamilton, perched on the beautiful Waikato River. The winners visited Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) for an introduction to the fantastic and practical courses of study at New Zealand’s ITPs.

But it wasn’t all about study – the winners got a warm welcome including some Bollywood dancing by local Indian students, and an introduction to a Maori tradition, the haka.

From there it was a short drive to the adventure centre of the North Island, Rotorua. Agroventures made sure that everyone’s adrenaline was pumping with tons of fun activities. The winners got to try the great New Zealand invention called bungy jumping, leaping 43 metres to a bouncy finish.

They also tried the “Swoop” extreme swing, a wild jet boat sprint, racing on the cycle monorail called the “Schweeb” and getting blown away by a freefall simulator.

They topped off their amazing day with an evening at Te Puia for a true Maori cultural experience. This included a traditional “powhiri” greeting, some song and dance with poi lessons for the ladies, and another shot at the haka for the boys, and then a feast prepared in a hangi, a traditional underground oven heated by Rotorua’s geothermal steam. The evening ended with a visit to an active geyser.

It was hard for Vikash, Ibrahim and Anita to believe you could pack so much into one day, and I’m sure they’re dying to find out what’s in store for them tomorrow.
