Korea, New Zealand Jointly Develop Elderly-Care Robot
Wednesday, 27 August 2008
In preparation for the advent of aging society, Korea and New Zealand are working together to nurture elderly care robot technology as a new growth engine.
(via Telecoms Korea) Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea (ETRI) announced the opening of a joint research center at the University of Auckland for the development and commercial use of elderly-care robotics.
The research center starts with the designing of helper robots for the aged, aiming to develop the core technologies and commercialise network-based aged-care robots by 2011. To this end, ETRI will provide its expertise in network service robot to the University of Auckland for the joint development project.
Besides ETRI and the University of Auckland, 12 companies (8 from New Zealand, 2 from the US and the 2 from Korea) will join the project and 2 nursing homes in New Zealand will be used as test-bed.
