More International Students Enjoying Otago

Thursday, 28 August 2008

Dunedin and the Otago Region are not very well known internationally, compared with the larger New Zealand cities like Auckland and Christchurch. Yet more and more international students are choosing to study at secondary schools in this beautiful, less-populated part of New Zealand.

The Otago Region has seen an increase of over 23% in international students in their secondary schools during the past year. From 409 students in 2006, the numbers increased to 421 in 2007, and has reached 519 this year.

Schools are enjoying the rise in these numbers. Prinipals find that international students create more cultural diversity in the classrooms, and increase New Zealand students' awareness of global issues.

Most of the students stay with local families during their time in Otago, which gives them the opportunity to experience the local way of life. For many parents, sending their children to New Zealand is an excellent way to give them an English-language education in a safe environment. New Zealand is also a more economical option than other English-speaking countries such as the UK or the US.

For some students, their time at an Otago secondary school will prepare them to return to their home countries with an expanded world view and a better knowledge of English. For others, it will be just the first step towards a higher education in New Zealand. As the home of the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic, this region offers international students a huge range of options for further study once they have completed secondary school.
