They don't come much more illustrious than Dr Birasak Varasundharosoth, consultant and board member to more than 20 Thai government bodies and organisations, and author of more than 200 publications and 100 essays on energy, environment, physics, mathematics, biotechnology, agriculture and animal science.
He has been listed in the Marquis 'Who's Who in the World' since 1995, 'Who's Who in Finance and Industry' in 1997, The Baron's '500 Leaders for the New Century' in 1999 and The Baron's 'Great Asian Minds' in 2000. Now the Governor of the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), Birasak has studied at many of the world's leading universities.
He looks back with fondness at his time in New Zealand, between 1977 and 1979, when he completed his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.
During his time in New Zealand he specialised in electrical machinery and, by the time he left, had published six internationally recognised articles.
Because New Zealand universities operate under a British based education system, he was able to move from Chulalongkorn University to the University of New South Wales and then to Canterbury University and back to Thailand, earning complementary qualifications without suffering any loss of time or status.
The fact that New Zealand university qualifications are so widely respected, allowed him to progress his remarkable career, and experience a different culture at the same time.
