THE SETTING
Otumoetai College is located in the beautiful seaside city of Tauranga (population 100,000) in the Bay of Plenty. The tranquil setting and mild climate make Tauranga a most desirable place to live in. Otumoetai College is a modern Co-educational high school established in 1965. A major new building and refurbishment programme has been completed. This provides a superb environment for international students to study in. The current roll is 1850 students that includes up to 75 international students from Austria, Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States. The College has spacious grounds and outstanding facilities, such as a recreation centre, indoor swimming pool complex and library.
THE CURRICULUM
Fully qualified, registered teachers teach the New Zealand National Curriculum from Years 9-13 level. All subjects are available to international students. Otumoetai College offers a full range of courses for NCEA Level 1,2 and 3. These lead to tertiary level studies.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT
This is available for all international students. The college offers three types of English language courses: International English (ESOL) Curriculum English Support and Oral English. If students require intensive English courses then this can be organised with local language schools. Our international students who have university aspirations are prepared for the IELTS examination.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME
Strong traditions exist in music, choir, drama and debating. Team sports and outdoor activities are an important part of both school life and leisure time. Sports facilities include a fully equipped multi-sport recreation centre, gymnasium, indoor heated swimming pool, hockey turf, netball and tennis courts. As well the college has spacious sports fields for rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket and athletics.
ACCOMODATION
Accommodation is provided in private homes close to the school. The Homestay Co-ordinator organises Police Vetting of the host families inspects the home for its suitability and provides ongoing monitoring. Each family is provided with a set of guidelines. The homestay Placement Fee is $100 and costs $190 per week for the accommodation.
STUDENT WELFARE
The college provides a well-developed, supportive guidance network and health clinic. International students have access to additional counselling and subject support from the Director or Dean of International. The Homestay Co-ordinator interviews all students each Term to monitor the situation in the student's homestay. Our international programme office is fully staffed, with a Director, Dean, Office Manager, Office Assistant, Homestay Co-ordinator, A full time ESOL Teacher and 2 ESOL Teacher Aides who all help to provide a caring environment for out international students.
