Shirley Boys' High School

Shirley Boys’ High School is located in the city of Christchurch on the east coast of the South Island. Christchurch is a beautiful city with two universities, a polytechnic and a college of education as well as many specialist training institutions.

Special Character

Shirley Boys’ High School is a boys’ school with a proud tradition of excellence in the academic, sporting and cultural areas. Students are encouraged to work hard and be involved in the many sports and activities within the school. Academic excellence is promoted and most of our graduates enter tertiary-level training institutions and universities. The school has for many years welcomed overseas students and we value and promote relationships being developed between New Zealand students and students from a range of overseas schools and cultures.

Academic and Co-curricular Programme

Shirley Boys’ High has a wide and comprehensive curriculum including:

• Mathematics, the full range of Science and Art subjects, Music, Graphics, Commerce, English, Languages, Technology and Physical Education
• email access for all students
• computer facilities throughout the school
• well resourced Food, Electronics, Art, Technology and Music workshops
• modern sports facilities including rugby and soccer fields, two gymnasia, weights room, tennis and squash courts and a swimming pool
• over thirty winter and summer sports, clubs and cultural activities.

Preparation, guidance and advice for tertiary level courses and training is available for all students. A flexible timetable system enables students to study a secondary school programme at different levels and achieve specific goals. Our aim is to meet the needs of individual students and ensure that their time at Shirley Boys’ High School is enjoyable and worthwhile.

International Department

Shirley Boys’ High School has a fully staffed International Students Department where overseas students learn English language and study skills in small classes. In addition, students have extra tuition in academic subjects, for example Mathematics and Physics, as well as the opportunity to complete IELTS before beginning tertiary-level study. Students who are only beginning English study can work at a level and pace to ensure maximum success. All overseas students receive initial and ongoing orientation and academic guidance as well as regular reporting and assessment on individual progress.

Homestay Programme

Homestay accommodation is arranged with friendly and helpful families who generally have sons attending the school. When students arrive in Christchurch, they are met at the airport and are taken to their accommodation.

Holiday and Group Programmes

“A High School Experience”
Special group programmes can be arranged for male and female students who wish to experience a New Zealand High School. These are generally one-to-three-month programmes that combine academic study, English Language and recreation activities.

Tuition Fees 2008

The annual tuition fee for international students is NZ$11,000. There is an administration fee of $250 for all new enrolments. Homestay fees are currently NZ$200 per week.
