Changes to Student Visa Policy Now in Effect

Students wishing to change their course or study or education provider after being issued a Student Permit should be aware that a new policy took effect on November 30, 2009.

Any student wishing to change course or provider will have to apply for a Variation of Conditions or a new Student Permit. This is not a new policy, however the criteria to be granted the Variation or Permit has changed.

To meet the criteria you must:

  • continue to meet all the student policy requirements
  • have not breached your permit conditions
  • be a bona fide applicant

Applications to change your course and/or education provider will only be approved if we are satisfied that your original student visa would have been issued for the proposed course and/or education provider.  This will include checking the information you provided with your initial student visa application.

Compliments to New Zealand Authorities for the changes made in the policy related to very important issue as mentioned above. Now the international students will not be misguided by un-professional and un-ethical education agencies existing in New Zealand who, in past , mis-guide them in their self interest to change the education providers.

I compliment NZ Immigration on bringing out this realistic change. A lot of uncertainty had arisen for the education providers as well as the students because of the activities of a handful of unscrupulous individuals who were exploiting the earlier policy for their personal gains by wrongly guiding the students to change the education provider after arriving in NZ. Hopefully this amendment will arrest that.

Good to know about the changes. When you say change in course do you mean changing what we choose to study or where in New Zealand we wish to study?

Changing course means either moving to a different institution, or changing the course you are taking within the same institution.
You will need a variation of conditions on your visa to do either of these things.
