Location and Facilities
The school is located in Dunedin in the southern South Island of NZ. King's offers some of the most modern facilities in a NZ school. In a period of rapid technological change, the school has built and opened new science laboratories, new integrated classroom blocks, mathematics classrooms, a computer suite and purpose-built catering suite, a new library with computerised facilities, and the most advanced Technology Centre (computer and electronics) in any NZ school.
Academic Programmes
We provide the widest curriculum choice of any school in the lower South Island and has a reputation for academic excellence. The top Form 7 scholars in NZ in recent years were both students of King's. The school prepares students for courses at all NZ universities and polytechnics. A feature of the school is the choice of studying subjects at different levels: e.g. a student may study English language at Y11 level and Mathematics at Y13 level. Students may choose any combination of subjects from the following: Accounting, Art, Art History, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Classical Studies, Design Technology, Design, Drama, Economics, English, French, Geography, Graphics, History, Japanese, Journalism, Maori, Mathematics, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Calculus, Music, Photography, Physical Education, Physics, Workshop Technology.
Extracurricular Programme
The school has developed a national reputation and a strong tradition in sport, cultural and general interests. Our aim is to provide the widest possible selection of activities in order to cater for the varied interests of as many boys as possible.
King's was the first school in Dunedin to welcome overseas students and has an established ESOL department, well-resourced and staffed. The school currently hosts students from Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Brazil, and the Peoples Republic of China. Only small numbers are enrolled from each country to encourage integration in the NZ way of life.
The school arranges homestay accommodation. This has the advantage of enabling the student to share family life and be cared for during holiday periods. Students are met at the airport and introduced to their new family. King's employs a homestay liaison person whose responsibility is to provide help and support for overseas students.
English language support is provided by the school through the Director of International Students. The students study ESOL courses at four levels. They progress as their English improves and are prepared for several ESOL qualifications, including IELTS, TOEFL. Students may also contract a special English teacher for themselves.
