Location and Facilities
Riccarton High School is located in Christchurch, a city of 350,000 people in the South Island of New Zealand. The school is located in the western suburbs of the city close to Christchurch International Airport and Canterbury University. We are proud of our academic achievements and reputation as a school that serves international students well. Riccarton has excellent specialist facilities and a well-equipped information technology base.
Academic Programme/Subjects Offered
We offer a wide range of subjects:
Year 13subjects include: English, Mathematics (Calculus), Mathematics (Statistics), Computing, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Classical Studies, Physical Education, French, Japanese, Music, Practical Art, Graphics & Design, Economics, Accounting, Home Economics, Media Studies, Drama, Statistics and Modelling. All of these subjects can also be taken at Year 12 level. A small number of subjects can be taught for the school by outside providers. This could involved an extra cost for students.
Extracurricular Programme
Some 40 clubs, sports, music and cultural groups are currently on offer.
Student Welfare
Pastoral care is a high priority. An orientation and peer support programme is held for all international students. All staff are familiar with the learning needs of international students. Deans at each form level, and the International Student Director, provide extra assistance. Contact with host families and guardians is maintained by the Homestay Coordinator.
Accommodation
Our school will provide accommodation if requested. A good range of local home hosts has been established. Students are met and assisted on arrival by host families and the Homestay Coordinator. Weekly board approximately NZ$190 - $200
English Language Entry Requirements
All students are tested for English speaking, listening and writing ability to establish the assistance required and for course confirmation.
English Language Support
Extensive English language assistance is available from experienced tutors. This support continues for as long as necessary in specialist ESOL classes, small groups or on an individual basis. IELTS is also offered to students preparing to attend a tertiary institute in Christchurch. All tuition is in English.
Fees
Tuition fee for 2008 is NZ$11,500. This is all inclusive except for uniform ($500-800), personal stationery costs, NZQA fees and out of school trips.
