The school was established in 1883 by settlers who wanted to ensure their daughters would receive high quality education. There is a wide range of courses offered including ESOL courses taught by well-qualified and enthusiastic teachers. Students receive personal attention in small classes and are encouraged to strive for excellence. The College has a superb record of high academic results, as well as a strong reputation for musical, artistic and sporting achievement.

Our Mission Statement is

Nelson College for Girls will provide a stimulating and caring environment where students strive for personal excellence.

We place a high value on academic achievement and have high expectations of our students. We encourage students to participate in regional and national academic, cultural and sporting competitions and activities. We take pride in celebrating their successes.

The promotion of ICT to support learning has been a focus for Nelson College for Girls for the past few years. The aim has been to make the use of ICT an intrinsic part of learning. Every student in the College has her own email address and access to ICT facilities. Boarders also have out-of-school access.

Strong pastoral care systems exist. We understand the adolescent stage of development and our need to provide as much support as possible for students to realise their potential, particularly if they are studying in a new country. Orientation programmes on arrival help students adjust to their new school and new city, and an International Dean, Boarding Dean and a Homestay Co-ordinator are available to assist with any difficulties that may arise.

Our website will provide with you up-to-date information on the activities within the school and the successes of our students (www.ncg.school.nz).
