Richard Spencer Spetnagel Jr.

Name: Richard Spencer Spetnagel Jr.
Born: United States of America
Age: 28
Locations: Christchurch - Canterbury
Discipline: Viticulture and Wine

Spencer Spetnagel is into the outdoors. He is also passionate about the art and science of wine -making. Coming to New Zealand has enabled him to pursue both activities.

Lincoln University’s reputation as a premium education provider in viticulture (the science or practice of growing grapevines, especially for wine making), and oenology (the scientific study of wine and the making of wine) attracted him for several reasons.

“The grad dip programme is one year long. I wanted to learn the chemistry and science behind V & O, but didn’t want to spend three years at school again. "

He also liked the holistic approach of the course, combining both practical experience and theory. Field trips to vineyards and the chance to meet key viticulturalists, winemakers and suppliers have provided significant insights into the nature of the New Zealand industry, as well as providing him with a qualification that is well accepted internationally, he says.

“University has kept me busy. It’s an in-depth programme, but is well worth the effort.”

Outside of study, Spencer has thrown himself into backpacking and other outdoor activities, including Ultimate Frisbee, a game played by two seven player squads with a high tech plastic disc on a field similar to a football field. Spencer is currently a New Zealand National Champion.

“The South Island of New Zealand had been at the top of my list to visit for many years,” he says.

“I’ve really enjoyed exploring the country while also gaining a valuable qualification.”
