We offer a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with majors in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Fashion Design or Photography as well as a range of business and contextual courses, and for those who require it, English language support. During the course of the degree students also gain an exit qualification with each year of study completed.

We also offer foundation studies and postgraduate programmes allowing Whitecliffe to be a destination for both new and experienced artists/designers wishing to progress in their chosen discipline.

Entry Requirements

Foundation level certificates

There are no prerequisites for the semester two 18-week foundation level certificate programme for domestic students with English as their first language. However applicants must be at least 17 years of age during their year of commencement.

International students entering the 18-week foundation level certificate need an English Level of IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.

International students with an IELTS of 4.5 or equivalent can enter the alternative full year Certificate of Arts and Design (Foundation). This programme is designed to raise students� English levels to IELTS 5.0 or equivalent before entering arts and design study in semester two.

International students must be at least 18 years of age in their first year of study to enter either programmes.

Bachelor of Fine Arts minimum requirements

Qualifications. NCEA University Entrance or equivalent CIE/IB grades (preferably including practical art, and/or design and English). Discretionary Entrance is available to students with exceptional NCEA Level 2 grades. These students must display high levels of motivation and maturity.

Cambridge exam system: 120 points on the UCAS Tariff including:

� a minimum grade of �D� in at least two A or AS level subjects equivalent to those on NCEA approved list

� plus a minimum AS or A Level �D� grade in one further subject either from the approved list or related domain on the National Qualifications Framework

� plus A Level �D� pass or higher in IGCSE Mathematics

� plus an �E� pass or higher in AS English.

Applicants over 20 years may have above requirements waived by the Admissions Board, if they can demonstrate suitable experience.

Domestic students must be at least 17 years of age, during the year of commencement.

International students must be at least 18 years of age, during the year of commencement.

Students whose first language is not English are required to produce a recent IELTS of 6.5 to enter the first year of the BFA, or 5.0 to enter a preparatory first year (which provides English assistance). For further IELTS information see table on page 53. International native English speakers are assessed on portfolio and secondary school results.

Bachelor of Fine Arts portfolio

Portfolios show an applicant�s creative potential and ability. All applicants must submit a portfolio of representative samples even if they have not had formal training in art and design. The portfolio can be created at home, in class, at work or through Whitecliffe�s Foundation Certificate programme. A good portfolio may contain a variety of work; sketches, drawings, painting, mixed media, photography or sculpture. Workbooks and journals are useful also in demonstrating methodologies and ideas. Whitecliffe does not set a rigid presentation format; work doesn�t need to be mounted on �high school� boards.

Postgraduate requirements

Three letters of reference.

Letter of intent (500 to 1000 words).

Evidence of computer proficiency.

Evidence of English language proficiency.

Please note Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or advanced standing may be granted to students with experience of prior tertiary training or professional experience in arts and/or design.
