There is a music suite with mini-lab computer technology, an 800-seat auditorium for performing arts, 2 gymnasiums, swimming and diving pools and a large, well-appointed cafeteria.
Academic Programme
Auckland Girls prepares students for studying at University and other tertiary institutions. We teach in all the seven learning areas of the NZ curriculum - Technology (Computing, Graphics and Design), the Arts (English, Music, Fine Arts), Languages (English, Latin, French, Samoan, Maori, Japanese, Spanish), Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences and Physical Education. Our Learning Centre offers programmes for both gifted students and those needing extra help.
English Language Assistance
We have a range of classes (at no extra cost) for students who need extra assistance with their English.
- The Reception English Class helps students improve their English before entering mainstream classes.
- English Support Classes provide 8 hours of English a week (4 hours more than other English classes) in Years 9, 10 & 11.
- An English for Academic Purposes Class teaches Year 12 & 13 students the skills needed to study at University level and enables them to sit the IELTS exam which is recognised worldwide.
Extracurricular Programme
A wide range of cultural activities ranging from debating, drama, orchestra and choir through to the opportunity to participate in cultural groups including Maori and Polynesian groups is offered. Students are able to learn to play musical instruments at school. A variety of both team and individual sporting activities is provided. Auckland Girls holds New Zealand and Auckland titles in several sports.
International Relationships
Our students from different nations help and educate each other by sharing their cultural wealth. We celebrate this cultural richness with an International Week when students learn about each other's cultures through a range of school-wide activities. We also have school trips overseas, including Tahiti, Samoa, Europe and America. Our students acquire the skills and confidence to be comfortable and successful in an international world.
Accommodation
We require all our students to live in a homestay. We use caring and responsible homestay agencies to organise accommodation and, with our Homestay Coordinator, to oversee the student's welfare in her homestay. Living with a Kiwi family is an excellent way of improving English language skills. Current homestay agency costs are approximately $300 (placement fee) and $200 per week (accommodation).
Student Welfare
The Dean of International Students is available to help students with any problems they may have either at school or at home. The school also employs two fully trained guidance counsellors and a registered nurse.
