Welcoming international students:

Nelson College for Girls has been welcoming international students for over 20 years. We appreciate and are enriched by ethnic, religious and cultural diversity, by differing points of view and by diverse heritages. There is a strong support system for our international students and a sound ESOL programme, which enables those students whose English is not strong to quickly improve their skills so that they can take a full part in the life of the school.

Accommodation:

We offer our international students a choice of accommodation. Friends are made for life in our friendly Boarding House which is situated on campus and is home to 155 students. Free Wi-Fi is available for the students to use and although there are computers in the study rooms, some girls choose to bring their own laptops which can be registered to allow access to the internet through the school's filter.

Alternatively, some girls prefer to live with a family in the community, and our Homestay Co-ordinator can offer approved homestay accommodation.

Academic excellence:

The College has a proud tradition of excellent education for girls within an environment that provides reliable support. Our students consistently achieve NCEA results which are well above the national average and over 70% of our girls move on to university or tertiary education, not only in New Zealand, but world-wide.

Education:

Students receive personal attention and by establishing a positive and challenging school culture, we ensure that each student strives to achieve their personal best. We have a broad curriculum with many subject options to choose from, all taught by highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers. ESOL is also available at all levels and girls are assessed on arrival to establish their requirements.

As well as our high academic results, the College also has a strong reputation for musical, artistic and sporting achievements. A wide variety of music tuition and sports are available either in school or in the community. In addition to the benefits of single sex education, we also offer the opportunity for girls to share some senior classes with boys from nearby Nelson College through the close relationship between our schools. Our music and drama productions are also a regular feature of the combined Colleges.

Facilities:

Our facilities include extensive music rooms, an excellent library, 6 computer suites, Wi-Fi access, 8 science laboratories, a new Health and Fitness Centre, swimming pool and comprehensive art and photography facilities.

Pastoral care:

Strong pastoral care systems are in place. We understand the adolescent stage of development and our need to provide as much support as possible for students to realise their potential, particularly if they are studying in a new country.

Orientation programmes on arrival help students adjust to their new school and new city and our Director for International Students and staff in our friendly international office are always available to assist with any difficulties which may arise.

Nelson:

Situated at the top of New Zealand's South Island, Nelson has a busy domestic airport with daily direct flights from the international airports at Auckland (1 hour), Wellington (35 minutes) and Christchurch (1 hour).

Nelson is a beautiful seaside city and a very popular tourist destination, enjoying the advantages of both city and country living. Nelson's safe and friendly environment has a great deal to offer its international students, with a good range of shopping facilities, sporting opportunities, restaurants and cinemas as well as excellent educational opportunities.

Nelson has a mild climate with the reputation of being the sunniest city in New Zealand. It has easy access to beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers and boasts three outstanding National Parks. It also is a renowned centre for arts, crafts and music.
