Nelson College is a boys’ school with a current role of 960 students, including 156 boarders, 40 International students from ten countries and 104 Preparatory School students.

Location

The impressive buildings of Nelson College are located within a ten minute drive from the airport and the school is within easy walking distance of the vibrant city centre. Nelson is a busy and important regional airline link with several flights each day to and from the international airports of Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland. Nelson/Tasman has a regional population of around 80,000. With consistently high sunshine hours, three national parks and some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand the stunning landscape provides many opportunities for leisure activities including:

* Outdoor adventure including kayaking, mountain biking, skiing, hiking and kite surfing

Accommodation

* At Nelson College you have the choice of living in one of our three boarding houses located on the College grounds. Each house has its own housemaster, matron and tutors, whose role is to assist students with personal study, assignments and examination preparation.

* You may choose to live with a New Zealand family in a homestay. Homestay families are carefully selected to suit individual needs.

Academic Programmes

A full range of subjects and options are available for students from Year 9 to Year 13. Students participate in the NCEA assessment programme with many students at a senior level gaining university entrance. We offer you:

* the opportunity to specialise in the senior school

* a senior curriculum integrated with Nelson College for Girls

* opportunities are available to participate in technological and academic competitions, extension programmes in Future Problem Solving and enhancement programmes in Mathematics and English

All international students are assessed on arrival and placed in appropriate programmes. A full-time one term intensive English course is provided for all students who need more language skills before entering mainstream courses. On-going ESOL classes and subject support are also provided.

Accommodation

Boarding fees are $8750 per year (this does not include the school holidays)

Homestay fees are $9170 per year (46 weeks). This includes a $200 location fee.

Tuition

$11,900 (Includes the current Government levy of $900. Any additional Government charges levied will also need to be paid.)

Special Features

Mataki Lodge is a unique outdoor education facility, owned by Nelson College and is situated beside the Nelson Lakes National Park, 120km south of Nelson.

History

Founded in 1856, Nelson College is the oldest State Secondary School in New Zealand. Nelson College has a history of innovation and leadership in New Zealand including the introduction of rugby to New Zealand and the introduction of music as a subject area in New Zealand education.
