“I am Asumi Yamakawa, an international student from Tokyo, Japan. I really love Henderson High School, and I’m looking forward to my final year of study at the school next year. I have gone out of my way to get involved in lots of different parts of school life, such as performing in the music group or taking part in sports.
I’m really honoured to be appointed as the school’s Board of Trustees’ student representative for 2002. I went on a course in October to learn what I need to do in my new role. I met lots of other student reps from schools throughout Auckland. As part of my role I will be looking out for our international students, to make sure they feel at home. I’ve found everyone at the school to be wonderful, open and friendly. The teachers are excellent, they’re supportive and experienced. The kids are friendly too.
In my new role as student rep, I will be keeping the lines of communication open between students and the school’s management team. The role involves asking students what they want. The role will give me a chance to communicate ideas students have and to inform students of developments through Senior Council meetings or assembly speaking spots. I believe it will be a really good way to bridge the gaps between the student and the adult worlds. It’s good to know I was elected because of my attitude and popularity within the student body.
Henderson High School Deputy Principal Maureen Page, says: “Asumi is one of those all-round students, excelling in a number of areas. She came to Henderson at the beginning of last year and has been involved in lots of things since. She is very talented at music, playing the saxophone and the piano. She plays in the school band and has taken part in assembly performance, a talent quest and the school production. Wherever there’s something that requires involvement, Asumi is there in the middle of it.”
