Studying at NZMA has helped Youngbin You (Binnie) get her foot in the door to an exciting career in New Zealand.

Whilst studying for her National Diploma in Business, the NZMA Employment Advisor helped her land a part-time job working at Orbit Corporate Travel. Since graduating earlier this year, the position has become full-time.

"I'd never thought of working in an office environment but I'm actually really enjoying it," says Binnie.

She says the skills she learned at NZMA have prepared her well for the workforce.

"During the year we covered so many different areas such as teamwork, accounting, communication skills and project launches. We graduate with a basic knowledge in a wide range of business-related areas which gives us many options when it comes to finding a job we can learn more details about a specific area once we gain employment."

The 20 year old from Pusan first came to New Zealand in 2002 and spent a year as a student at Kelston Girls' College and then Mt Roskill Grammar School. She returned to Korea for a year where she taught English to children and worked in a travel agency before heading back Down Under in 2004.

"The main reason I came back is because I wanted to study, and studying in New Zealand is not as tough as it is in Korea. I spent my first six months looking for a good school and then my friend showed me an NZMA brochure."

She liked what she saw and enrolled in the one year National Diploma in Business.

"At first I found it a bit confusing because I had no background in business, but over the year I learnt a lot. My tutor Andrew was really supportive. Without him I wouldn't have been able to finish my business plan. I really struggled at the end but he gave me a lot of help."

Putting together a business plan is a significant part of the diploma course. Binnie spent two months researching and compiling a business plan to set up a New Zealand-based interior design company.

"I've grown up around interior design. My parents started off with a small business dealing in window coverings and eventually expanded their business to remodeling and building apartments. I am also interested in these things."
Her impressive business plan covers a wide range of areas in the business set-up including the start-up process, production methods, staffing plan, market analysis, set-up costs and cash flow requirements.

"I don't think I'm in a position to start up my own business for a while yet but I've told my parents that I've done all the research and everything is ready for them to come to New Zealand and set up a business if they want to! I think there are lots of opportunities for this sort of thing in New Zealand as I don't think a lot of people are really aware of interior design yet. I'd love to stay in this country and eventually set this business up."
