Wang Li came to New Zealand to study English, at a level that would then lead her into University study. So she chose Massey University's English Language Centre. Now she tells her own story in English, and in considerable detail.
"New Zealand is a beautiful and peaceful country which has a good environment and education so it attracts a large number of overseas students to further their studies.
It is my pleasure to study here. As time passes, I know New Zealand more and more, and I like the country more than ever, because not only there is beautiful landscape, but also Kiwis (New Zealanders) are very kind and hospitable.
Now I am studying the English course at Massey English Language Centre. If overseas students want to go to university in New Zealand, they must take IELTS exam and they must get 6.0 (exam mark) for a Bachelor degree and 6.5 for a Masters degree.
I am enjoying my course very much because it is different from other courses which I have taken in China. Here I have more chance to talk with the teacher and classmates and I have become more active in class. What is the biggest difference is that the teacher always encourages me and that makes me more confident. I like this way of teaching. In addition, I have met many friends from different countries and I know so many different cultures.
New Zealand has some accommodation for international students such as homestay, flats, hostel, and so on. Personally, I think homestay is the best choice for overseas students because there is a good opportunity to practise speaking English. Also, students can experience the (New Zealand) culture first hand, which is a great help when trying to understand the language. A flat also has its advantages the accommodation fees are reasonable, and you can cook by yourself. However, to find good flatmates is sometimes not easy.
Generally speaking, studying in New Zealand is quite good. But there is also something else to notice the sun in summer is famous for its intensity. You should take care of your skin! Anyway, it is a wise choice to live in New Zealand."
Wang Li has now completed her English Language studies and started a Bachelor of Business Studies degree programme at Massey University.
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, with 1.3 million people.
