Having decided on an international tertiary education, Mohammed Al-Maimani was attracted to New Zealand, as an English speaking country providing high quality academic programmes.
Initially enrolling for English language studies at the AUT English Language School, Mohammed is now studying for the Certificate in Foundation Studies at Massey University in Palmerston North. "The University facilities are great and I enjoy interacting with the other students in my class. The weather is quite different to Oman where it can get up to 50 degrees during the day.
"I get involved in Massey University English Language Centre sports activities such as soccer, frisbee and basketball. Frisbee is a new sport for me and I enjoy being involved with other students from a range of different cultural backgrounds."
Despite having to cook for himself for the first time, Mohammed is enjoying the advantages of living in accommodation with close access to his education, a common of education in New Zealand. "I am currently staying in a flat close to the University campus. My classes are held at the University only about 10 minutes away from my flat!"
In addition to his study programme, Mohammed has taken the opportunity to explore the North Island. "I have enjoyed travelling around New Zealand. I have been to Auckland, Bay of Islands, Wellington, Taupo, Hamilton and now Palmerston North. My father came out to New Zealand last year and we did a lot of sightseeing together with other friends. The scenery in New Zealand is very beautiful and I enjoy the natural state of the country. Wellington is my favourite city because of the "big city atmosphere" and European style."
On completion of his Foundation Studies, Mohammed hopes to gain entry into the Bachelor of Management Information Systems degree at Massey University. "I then hope to return to Oman to become the General Manager of the Hotel Hayat."
