Yuka MATSUMOTO

Yuka came to New Zealand as a Registered Nurse from Japan, on a working holiday in the autumn of 2004. She developed the plan of working in long-term care facilities and studying English to achieve the IELTS test score required by the Nursing Council for New Zealand Registration.

Working and studying simultaeneously was a real challenge, especially lunching on a sandwich in one hand, with a list of vocabulary to memorise in the other. After school, her time was divided between mountains of homework at the library, eating dinner, then more study back at home. Working in a nursing home, Yuka managed to achieve her 7.0 point score, submitted all her documentation to the Nursing Council and obtained her Nursing Registration. That felt good!

Three years on, Yuka still finds working in an English medical environment somewhat challenging, but immensely satisfying. The sacrifices were well worth while! Her advice is: keep your goal clearly in mind and don't give up!

私ワーキングホリデーでニュージーランドに来たのは２００４年の秋。オークランドで英語学校に通った後、南島の旅行にでかけ、その途中で知りあったドイツ人女性に「旅が終わったら介護施設でアルバイトを見つける予定」と話したところ、「日本でナースだったならここでも挑戦すべき」と勧められました。でもニュージーランドの看護師資格を取得するにはIELTSという英語の試験を受けスコア7.0以上という高得点が必要など長い道のりがあるもです。そのことを話すと、その女性はもともと通っていたCanterbury CollegeのIELTS準備コースを紹介してくれました。

色々考えた後、だめもとでIELTSを受けてみることを決意し、入校。その日から猛勉強の日々がはじまりました。授業中はもちろん、ランチタイムもサンドイッチ片手に単語を覚え、学校が終わると、図書館に直行して山のような宿題をこなし、帰宅し夕食を食べ、また勉強。

老人ホームで働きながら３度目の試験でようやく7.0ポイント獲得し、すべての書類を提出し看護師免許証が届いたときには、諦めずにがんばった甲斐があったと感じました。

働きはじめ3年経ちますがいまだに英語には苦労しています。脳梗塞既往のある患者さんの場合、ニュージーランドの看護師でも言葉を理解するのは困難ですが、私の場合はその100倍もの時間を要します（笑）それでも、この環境で働けている毎日に満足しています。一度は諦めかけたけれど、挑戦してみてよかった。これから海外で働きたいと思っている方も希望を持ち続け、目標に向かって前進し続けてください。きっといつか届きます。
