Simarjeet (Simar) Dhanoa

This 19-year-old from the Punjab region in India decided to study viticulture and wine production at NMIT Marlborough. Because it was based in the "roots" of Marlborough wine country with plenty of opportunities for gaining practical work experience.

It also made financial sense - studying viticulture in New Zealand was substantially cheaper than in other countries such as Australia.

Simar says he quickly adapted to Kiwi culture."The people here are very friendly, right from the reception staff to the tutors. The tutors encourage you to come forward and speak. It's a very friendly environment, you don't feel alone here."

When he finished studying in 2005, Simar was immediately employed by a prestigious winery in Auckland.
