Amandeep Singh first heard about CPIT through friends who had attended the institute. Like them, he was interested in the practical vocational training that CPIT offers across all programmes. After a foundation course at CPIT, Amandeep embarked on a Diploma in Engineering and is now in his second year.

When he completes his diploma, Amandeep will move into the Bachelor of Engineering Technology programme and after graduating he will look for employment in Christchurch. “After the earthquake, there should be lots of opportunities for mechanical engineers in Christchurch,” he said.

Amandeep, who is from Punjab in India, said he enjoys the study methods at CPIT and the skills-based approach to learning. He also said that he appreciates the attitude of his tutors and advisors, whom he has found very attentive, helpful and friendly. This was especially evident after the earthquake, he said, when students needed reassurance and up-to-date information. “I was in Auckland at the time, but I was able to get information about when college started back, when courses started and where, which was very helpful for me. About myself personally, they said, ‘If you need any help please call’,” he said.

Amandeep was impressed with the way CPIT worked to recommence all programmes in good learning environments. Engineering courses were temporarily located to CPIT’s trades campus following the earthquake in order to resume classes as soon as possible. Students and staff have found the facilities there excellent. They will return to CPIT’s main Madras Street campus in coming months in a staged, managed return that has been planned to cause the least disruption to students’ learning.

Meanwhile, Amandeep is also enjoying the social side of life at CPIT and the many friends he has made here.
