It was the final day of the Kiwi IQ winners’ tour of New Zealand, and it finished up where it all began, in Auckland. It was a busy last day with two institution visits and a media interview before the winners finally got a bit of time to pick up gifts and souvenirs to take home.

As a young child in Baghdad, Nadin Janan Wadi remembers hearing the windows rattle as the bombs fell during the 1991 US bombardment of that city in the first Gulf War. Today, she’s poised to become one of the first female software engineering graduates at the University of Waikato, and already holds down a part-time job at top Hamilton firm Gallaghers.

Brazilian Student Places Third at Dance Awards

International student Andre Santos has won third place at the prestigious Alana Haines Australasian Awards, which are held every second year in Auckland. Andre, who studies at the New Zealand School of Dance, also received the Audience Favourite Award.

Kiwi Researchers Finalists for International Operations Research Award

Helping a global company to reduce costs and increase earnings in a declining market has gained researchers from The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering a finalist’s spot in an international competition. Norske Skog, one of the world’s largest paper producers, called on the University’s Department of Engineering Science to streamline its manufacturing and supply chain costs using operations research. The model Professor Andy Philpott helped Norske Skog to develop saved the company more than (US)$200 million over 11 years.
