Our History
NZTC is the first private training institution in New Zealand to gain approval to offer an early childhood teaching qualification, and has been instrumental in gaining professional teaching status for early childhood teachers in New Zealand.

NZTC provides two qualifications which lead to New Zealand teacher registration to cater to the increasing demand for qualified teachers in the early childhood sector. NZTC also provides qualifications which equip students with an in-depth knowledge of early childhood education. It is relevant for careers with a specialist early childhood focus, such as social work and health. The qualifications are at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Career options in teaching
100% of NZTC students graduate with teaching jobs in the early childhood sector.

Qualified early childhood teachers are included on New Zealand Immigration's Long Term Skill Shortage List. Accordingly, there are incentives for international students who study early childhood qualifications that lead to teacher registration in New Zealand. Incentives include spouse work permits (conditions apply - see the Immigration New Zealand website for details).

Other career options
With a specialist early childhood qualification from NZTC, you can work in any setting which focuses on children's lives and learning. The knowledge you will gain is relevant to areas such as social work, child therapy, and child psychology. Early childhood training and an understanding of the childcare sector is also valuable in policy roles in government that focus on early childhood and education. You could even become involved in early childhood teacher education - as a college or university lecturer, or curriculum developer. Specialist early childhood education qualifications are especially valuable to those with leadership positions within the sector, such as centre/preschool managers.

Modes of Study
NZTC offers a range of study modes including classroom-based lectures and distance learning. All NZTC programs are available online in NZTC's custom-made online learning environment - NZTC Online - which was developed for early childhood educators.

Please note: International students in the distance learning mode of study must attend a minimum of 16 hours per week in an approved, licensed early childhood centre under the supervision of an Associate Teacher. International students must also attend four hours of tutorials a week on campus.
