Onslow College is situated in Wellington which is the capital city of New Zealand and where our Government meets. The city contains the Embassies and Consulates of all the countries with which New Zealand has relationships. Some of these families attend Onslow College.

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city. It’s full of cafes, bars and theatres and has a beautiful harbour.

Onslow College is situated in Wellington which is the capital city of New Zealand and where our Government meets. The city contains the Embassies and Consulates of all the countries with which New Zealand has relationships. Some of these families attend Onslow College. Wellington city has a population of approximately 160,000 and is built around a beautiful harbour and tree covered hills. It has interesting shopping centres and entertainment facilities.

Onslow College is situated in the suburb of Johnsonville, 10 minutes north of central Wellington by car. Ithas an excellent shopping centre, lots of bush and parks nearby and is also on the train and bus routes.

Onslow College is a co-educational non uniform state school with a roll of around 1150 students.

It has a strong tradition of academic education within a student centred philosophy.

A cultural diverse environment

Onslow College students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. The school has a long tradition of welcoming international students and has run cultural exchanges for many years. Anumber of our students also come to live in New Zealand for up to 5 years with their families who work for an Embassy or Consulate. As wekk there re a number of new immigrant from a variety of countries. Over 10% of all our students are from non English speaking backgrounds.

Onslow also offers a number of exciting international student exchanges. We have a 'sister school' relationship with Yamamura Girls' High School in Tokyo. Other groups have visited Germany, Noumea on Language visits as well as Europe for Classical Studies, Australia for sports, and the Himalayas for tramping and Mexico and Spain for Spanish language.

Language and Study Support

Specialist language teachers run an English language programme which aims to meet the needs and English level of the students. In addition, the ESOL Department provides in class support and works with students individually. The department also runs a Curriculum Based Language course to support students with their Mathematics. Students are prepared for the New Zealand university entrance English requirements and the I.E.L.T.S examination.

The ESOL Department works hard at teaching the students the necessary study skills to function effectively in their mainstream classes and tertiary study. Some of the topics covered in their course are time management, exam preparation, note taking, setting goals and vocabulary learning.

Social Support

The International Student Department runs orientation programmes for all new students throughout the year. An International Dinner is held at the beginning of the year to welcome new students and their host families. Students are also taken on an outdoor education camp where they have the opportunity to experience high ropes, abseiling and rafting in one of our forest parks. Other outings and events are arranged during the year. A Career Expo is also held each year for all International Students in the Wellington Region.

The students are encouraged to join in sporting and cultural activities with the wider school. There are many sports teams they can join which compete locally and nationally. Other activities available include a musical production, school band,school orchestra and other musical groups.

Academic Support

Onslow College focuses on providing a high standard of teaching for our international students wishing to complete their schooling in New Zealand. The students are well prepared for the national examination and achieve good pass rates.

Individual Care

Onslow College is known for its excellent guidance programme and value the importance of giving students individual time. The International Department has an 'open door'� approach and someone is always available to deal with the students' needs. The Director of International Students helps with any school subject difficulties or school problems. The Homestay Manager and Office Administrator are available as well as the School Counsellors. Bilingual support is available where necessary.

Accommodation

The Homestay Manager arranges accommodation for the students and works with the student's family. The students are met on arrival by the host family. The school works hard to provide good care for the International Students and provides training and support for the host parents, who are contacted and visited regularly.

Our Programme

The school provides the opportunity for the students to have either an academic or a cultural experience during their time in New Zealand.

There are a wide range of subjects available for International Students to enjoy. These include Computer Studies, Drama, Japanese, Music, Art Design, Photography and Economics. The school also offers the options for students to learn Spanish, French, Japanese, German and Maori. Chinese is available only at Year 13.

We offer many sports and cultural activities. These include skiing, basketball, tennis, badminton, tramping, learning a musical instrument, rowing, rugby, table tennis and soccer.

Music is strong at all levels of the curriculum. Individual and group tuition is available for students who wish to learn the clarinet, drums, flute, guitar, keyboards, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet or voice. There manyschoolbands, chamber ensembles,a concertband, a choir and an orchestra. Onslow College is represented at many regional and national musical competitions and festivals. The Kapahaka group practices regularly and performs at a variety of school events.

Information and Communication Technology

Fees

Annual fees for 2011/2012 are:

Tuition : $14,000

Tuition feeswill remain the same during the student's study at Onslow College

Homestay Fee : $230 per week

Homestay Support Fee: $750 per year

All international students are required to have medical insurance which can be arranged for you. The cost per year is $456 for Southern Cross or $506 for Unicare.
