Dunedin is the main centre of the Otago Region, in New Zealand’s south.

Bayfield High School is a Year 9 to 13 (Form 3 to 7) co-educational High School situated in Andersons Bay, Dunedin. We serve the city's eastern area and the Otago Peninsula communities. The school roll is 720. Bayfield is hugely popular and successful for international students.

Bayfield High School was established in 1961 and has earned a reputation for academic excellence. We provide a friendly, supportive environment where students are encouraged to reach their full potential. We have special strengths in Music and Art and gain above average results in National Examinations. In 2001 we were ranked in the top 10 schools in New Zealand for our 7th form Bursary exam results.

Location and Facilities

The school is in Dunedin and is a community-centred school. We have extensive grounds, a well-equipped gymnasium and weights room, an excellent library and well-resourced computing facilities. We have five science laboratories, music suite, art rooms, senior common rooms and a careers room. All students are issued with personal email addresses and have access to the Internet for communication home.

Academic Programme

The school offers a wide ranging academic programme. We place emphasis on preparing students well for tertiary study. Subjects include: English, Mathematics with Calculus, Mathematics with Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Classical Studies, Economics, Accounting, Workshop Technology, Graphics and Design, Computing, Physical Education, Art History, Music, Art Printmaking, Practical Art, Art Photography, Alternative English, German, French, Home Economics, ESOL.

The outdoor education programme provides a year long course that involves Skiing,Mountainbiking,rockclimbing,Yachting,Kayaking,Tramping ang Navigation

Extra- Curricular Activities

An extensive range of academic, cultural and sporting programmes are offered. These include sports such as rugby, soccer, netball, softball, tennis, basketball, fencing, orienteering, canoeing, yachting, swimming, skiing, canoe polo, underwater hockey, athletics, cross country, cricket, hockey, golf, badminton, triathlon, volleyball. We also have a wide ranging outdoor recreation programme including tramping, abseiling, canoeing, etc. Our Music Department produces an annual show and provides individual musical tuition, choir, orchestra, and a jazz band.

Special Relationship with Overseas Students and Schools

We have a tradition of students coming from a wide variety of countries. These countries include: Malaysia,Germany,Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, France, Brasil, China and Thailand. Students are welcome from any country and we contact parents and attempt to arrange a mutually agreeable contract on what each student is expected to achieve while at school. Students are met at Dunedin Airport and we transport them to their accommodation. We will also help with visa preparation.

Student Welfare

The international student programme is the responsibility of the Overseas Students'Dean.We aslo have the coordinator who looks after the welfare of students in the school.She alsohelps in arranging student finances, visas and medical insurance and support for students wanting to go on to tertiary institutions. We provide regular updates on each students' progress to parents.

Accommodation

We provide homestay accommodation for NZ $200 per week and this isclosely monitored by the Homestay Coordinator. All homestay families have to meet strict guidelines.

English Language Entry Requirements

We assess each student's English ability on arrival and then place them in appropriate ESOL classes. We have two full time ESOL teachers who provide help for new English and intermediate English Speakers. We also provide a separate programme for students wishing to sit TOEFL or IELTS qualifications. Extra one-to-one help is available on request.

Fees 2009

Annual Tuition fees are NZ$11,000. This provides for all school costs apart from uniform and examination fees.
