Massey University English Language Centre

IELTS New ZealandAward Holder

From 2006 the Centre’s brief will expand to include:

  • English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programmes for further study
  • ESOL programmes for students wishing to improve their English but not for further study
  • Academic bridging programmes for native and non-native English speakers
  • Coordination of international short courses
  • English language and culture/tourism group courses
  • Tailor-made English for specific purposes courses
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) testing

The programmes offered are shown below and are available at all Massey University campuses in Palmerston North,Auckland (Albany) and Wellington. Students come froma variety of different locations including a variety of South American, Asian, Middle Easternand European countries.

Certificate of Attendance in General English / English for Academic Purposes
This programme of study allows flexibility for students who wish to continue their English language study over a period of time until they reach their personal learning goals. The minimum time of enrolment is four weeks. Students who enrol in the General English and English for Academic Purposes programme study a full-time programme of 25 hours per week. International students not on student permits may study part-time. As a student’s English language proficiency level improves, students are able to move to more advanced classes. Each student has a programme carefully designed to meet his or her individual needs.

On completion of their course of study, students receive a Massey University Language Centre Certificate of Attendance.

Massey University is an IELTS Testing Centre. Students can choose to sit the IELTS examination as a pathway to further study at the University.

English and Rugby

Undertake English classes in the morning. In the afternoon you will undertake rugby based activities which may include rugby clinics, seminars, and courses, coaching of school teams, or being coached yourself. Studentsbecome a member of a New Zealand rugby club with involvement in rugby club activities with a club member appointed as your mentor. A sixteen week course commences at the end of February, Palmerston North campus only, and groups can attend by arrangement at other times for two to three weeks. Programmes are designed on request and tailored to each group's needs.

Certificates in English for Speakers of Other Languages

There are three Certificates in ESOL, the Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced, in this programme. The certificates are designed to help domestic and international students prepare for work, for further study, or for living in New Zealand. Students can study part-time or full-time depending on their own learning needs and the number of papers they choose to study. International students on a student visa must study full-time. Papers are taught in eight-week blocks.

Certificate in Foundation Studies

The Certificate in Foundation Studies is a full-time study programme of two semesters for domestic and international students from non-English speaking backgrounds who do not meet the academic and/or English language requirements for entry into diploma and degree courses at a New Zealand university. Domestic students may study part-time. There is also a fast-track programme of one semester for students from New Zealand high schools who do not meet the literacy requirements. Students study a combination of academic subjects (electives), academic English and study skills to prepare them for entry to unrestricted diploma or degree courses at Massey University. Classes begin mid-February and mid-July. Students should check which electives are available at each campus before enrolling.

Certificate in University Preparation

The CertUniPrep is a semester one programme designed to prepare you for successful university degree study. Once you successfully complete the CertUniPrep you will be able to enrol in a degree programme starting in semester two. There are a few degrees that do not allow a start in semester two, but in these cases Massey will offer great advice as to how best you can plan a programme to meet your goals. Massey's CertUniPrep is recognised by all New Zealand universities as an admission qualification. Free tuition fees for domestic students in 2006.

English for Cultural Understanding Programme

(a programme of short courses for groups of students)

The English Language Centre offers courses in English and Cultural Understanding for groups of students from many countries. Each course is specially designed to meet the needs and interests of the particular group. The principal aim of the programme is to develop the students’ confidence and fluency when speaking with native English speakers outside the classroom.

The specially designed courses usually include in class English language study combined with cultural trips and activities to give students the most advantageous experiences while they are immersed in an English language speaking environment. During the course, teachers assist students to become aware of the cultural differences that they are experiencing and through this, to develop their understanding of cultural differences in general.

English For Specific Purposes

MUELC also offers English for Specific Purposes courses. These carefully designed courses are for groups studying a particular subject, for example Business Studies, Aviation, Tourism or Language Teaching. These courses are designed on request and a minimum of ten participants in a group is required.

The English Proficiency And Language Teaching Methodology Programme

This programme is designed for professional development of teachers of English as a Foreign Language. Classes are strongly learner centred, enabling participants to experience new language teaching techniques as they study and analyse current language teaching methodologies. Participants are immersed in an environment where they need to communicate in English both in and outside the classroom for the duration of the programme. The course provides all participants with varied opportunities every day to speak, listen, read and write in English.

Massey University has an established reputation with the Japanese Ministry of Education who regularly send groups of teachers to the University for professional development.

IELTS Practice and Strategy Course

The IELTS Practice and Strategy Course is designed to introduce students to the IELTS test and provide practice and strategies for taking the test. This is a part-time course often taken in addition to another programme. MUELC is a testing centre for IELTS.
