Message from the Principal:

At Wainuiomata High School, our staff are committed to providing a dynamic and engaging school community in which students feel challenged, valued and supported. We aim to develop students who will always strive to do their best and who will relish the opportunities provided to them. Our classes are designed to provide the most appropriate and challenging learning environment for students at each level. As students progress to senior level a greater selection of subject choices is available so that they can develop their individual talents and follow their own paths of interest as comprehensively as possible. At all levels, our focus is on developing and nurturing academic, social, sporting, cultural and spiritual skills and abilities. We seek to give students the self-confidence that will see them take their place in the world as articulate, well-rounded young people who will actively give to their community.

LOCATION AND FACILITIES

The High School is in Wainuiomata, a suburb of Lower Hutt, only 15 kilometres from the centre of Wellington, the capital city. It is a medium sized co-educational school of just under 1,000 students.
Facilities are among the best in the Wellington region and
include:

- a well designed auditorium
- a purpose built student services centre
- six computer laboratories
- a new technology centre
- two full size gymnasiums and a weight training facility
- six new science laboratories
- recently updated classroom facilities

HOMESTAY ACCOMMODATION

We recognise the importance of having quality homestays. Safe, clean and friendly accommodation is available to our overseas students. Specially selected families are chosen—families who are welcoming, reliable, responsible and willing to provide ongoing Support and an experience of New Zealand life. We are fortunate to have a number of experienced homestay providers who open their homes to international students. All families have been personally checked, police vetted and approved by the Dean of International Students and the Homestay Co-ordinator.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

Wainuiomata High School provides a full secondary education from Year 9 to Year 13. Students have the opportunity to explore and develop their talents in a variety of subjects.
There is a strong emphasis on academic achievement and international students are expected to enter into the national qualifications. National Certificate in Educational Achievement Levels 1, 2 and 3.

Accounting, English, Mathematics, Art, ESOL, Mathematics with Calculus, Art History, French, Mathematics with Statistics, Biology, Future Problem Solving, Media Studies, Business Studies, Geography, Painting, Chemistry, Graphics, Photography, Classical Studies, History, Physical Education, Computer Aided Design, Home Economics, Physics, Computing, Horticulture, Sculpture, Design Technology, Hospitality, Science, Drama, Japanese, Textiles, Economic Studies, Maori.

Additional curriculum class for senior students - Hospitality Academy, Sports Academy, 'Futures' Training for Rugby League, Film School, Vocational Training, Bilingual Maori Unit, Techonology Department with strong links to a local Tertiary Provider.

Students intending to take a degree course at university or polytechnic should check the requirements for each course because individual tertiary providers have their own entry requirements for international students.

ENGLIGH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Wainuiomata High School has a specialist teacher of ESOL. Students will receive:
- daily classes in ESOL
- English preparation for University

Students will be tested on arrival and placed in courses best suited to their abilities.

STUDENT WELFARE

International Students add a valuable cultural dimension to our school. We understand the importance and caring for our overseas students and each year we welcome students from a number of countries. There is a strong pastoral network to support our overseas students and help them adjust to a new culture. The Dean of International Students is available at all times for inquiries, advice and support.
The Homestay Co-ordinator will monitor and assist in all homestay issues.

Wainuiomata High School also has a school wide restorative process as well as school mediation. The school leaders are involved in leadership programmes.

SPORTING AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Wainuiomata High School also offers many extra curricular sport and activities. We encourage our students to become involved in the life of the school.

GENERAL INFORMATION

UNIFORM
Students must wear a uniform. The cost is approximately $400-$500. Sometimes second hand uniforms are available.

STATIONERY
Students will need to purchase their own stationery and text books.

SCHOOL YEAR
The school year starts in early February and ends late November for Years 11-13 and late December for Years 9 & 10. The school day starts at 8.40am and ends at 3.00pm with five 1 hour lessons and breaks for morning tea and lunch. Students can bring their own lunch to school or buy it at the school canteen.

Term 1 - 2 February to 15 April 2011
Term 2 - 2 May to 15 July 2011
Term 3 - 1 August to 7 October 2011
Term 4 - 25 October to 20 December

Students may enrol at anytime during the term, but perferably at the beginning of each term.

SCHOLARSHIPS

No scholarships available to International Students.

ABOUT OUR STAFF

Our staff are well qualified and caring professionals who are committed to our students education. We have counsellors, social worker, doctor, nurse and support staff on site for student confidential matters.
