We embrace the talents of designers, directors, technicians, actors, managers, costumiers, playwrights, film makers, dramaturges and scholars. We encourage collaboration among disciplines. We promote new and exciting work. Our staff are practising theatre and screen professionals and our kura (school) provides a stimulating and supportive learning environment.

Drawing upon a wealth of expertise and collaborative talent, we use a process of skills development, provocation, reflection and analysis to encompass a structured, interdisciplinary approach to the work of making theatre.

The School’s philosophy is to provide exceptionally talented students with the skills to apply their imagination and intelligence to the realities of a career in the performing arts. This requires dedication to excellence in training and continual striving to maintain the high standards of our crafts best practice.

Toi Whakaari accepts and encourages applicants from all backgrounds and a variety of experience levels. You don’t need to have worked in theatre or hung out on a film set since you could walk.
