Friday, 12 October 2007

‘The New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships programme has been an excellent innovation which has boosted New Zealand’s education profile internationally and enhanced the intellectual horsepower of our universities’ says Stuart Boag, Communications Director for Education New Zealand.

‘The interest and global visibility of the Scholarships scheme is an important marketing asset as New Zealand pitches itself at the leading edge of research based tertiary education.’

Acting Tertiary Education Minister Steve Maharey today announced that 38 NZIDRS Scholarships had been awarded this year. The Scholarships fund up to 3 years study for international Ph.D. students. The NZIDRS scheme is administered by Education New Zealand for the Ministry of Education. Applicants are selected on academic merit via an evaluation process involving an expert panel drawn from across New Zealand.

‘Over 400 leading research students from 73 countries around the world applied for an NZIDRS Scholarship this year’ says Stuart Boag. ‘Such a strong field makes for a tough selection process, and results in some excellent students furthering their researches in New Zealand. Students from 21 different countries as diverse as Latvia, Myanmar, Chile and Nepal were successful in being selected.’

‘The range of disciplines being studied is as varied as the students themselves’ says Stuart Boag. ‘Whilst Vathsala Mohan from India studies bovine TB and Lesley Stringer from the UK studies Johnes Disease, Mette Riger-Kusk from Denmark will investigate glacier drainage and Yuliya Khrypko from the Ukraine is developing improved search-engine methodologies. Scholarship students will be enrolled at all New Zealand’s universities, and is a credit to our institutions that sought after students have determined that New Zealand is the best place to further their work.’

‘Each year, our Scholarship pages on the http://www.newzealandeducated.com portal website gets literally hundreds of thousands of hits from aspiring students’ says Stuart Boag. ‘The NZIDRS scheme is very visible and is an integral part of our education promotion. The successful recipients not only contribute immensely to the academic life of New Zealand, but will go on to be long term ambassadors for New Zealand as both a research leader and study destination. The long term benefits are immense’.
