Wanganui City College

Wanganui has a population of 42,000 people. It is a 1-hour flight from Auckland and 40 minutes from Wellington. I go to meet the students who fly into Wellington but we prefer them to fly for Auckland where we have a representative who meets the plane. The bus comes into Wanganui from all destinations and the bus station is 2 kms from the College. We make a point of meeting all students and their families that come to Wanganui.

Wanganui is a very safe city with good services and amenities. We offer a very comprehensive education that is good value for money. We limit the number of International students so we do not have too many from one culture. We pride ourselves on a good quality education and pastoral care. We have two Hostels, the second one is a separate girls boarding section that has been recently refurbished, plus a number of quality homestays should the students be who are better suited to living with a family.

Our Hostel caters for approximately 55 students both New Zealand and International. We have adult supervisors some of these of who are teachers. The School is a 5 minute walk from the Main Hostel and the Girls Boarding Hostel is on the school site.

We currently have 46 International Students (12 from Thailand, 7 from Japan, 6 from Hong Kong, 10 from China, 3 from Korea, 1 from Brazil, 2 from Samoa, 2 from Fiji, 1 from Kasakstan, 1 from Tajekastan and 1 from Vietnam).

Wanganui City College caters for students from 13 to 18 years of age. Year 9 to Year 13. We also cater for adult students. We do take some younger students in association with Wanganui Intermediate School Year 7 to Year 8. Their accommodation is in our boarding hostels.

We have good community links with Vietnamese, Japanese Chinese, Korean and Thai people who work as guardians for students when required.

Class numbers vary from 8 - 24. ESOL averages between 8-15 and is operating every period of the day. It is available to all International students and is used as a support programme as well as teaching IELTS.

We target all our students for qualifications towards National New Zealand Qualifications Authority prescribed courses culmination with Bursary and University Entrance.

We run special programmes that are required to suit our students needs if they are not available in the College or not programmed in a normal school day.

Wanganui has a very temperate climate, not too hot in the summer, 26-28 degrees and not too cold in winter 7-9 degrees. We have 4 seasons. Wanganui is situated on the West Coast half way down the North Island of New Zealand. I Manage the Homestay programme for the College and we like students to come to the Hostel first, until we get to know them and then to Homestay.
