Profile
Whangarei is a medium size city approximately 2 hours drive or 30 minutes flight north of Auckland. Whangarei, situated in one of the fastest growing regions of New Zealand, blends city living with a coastal environment and boasts many fine beaches. Whangarei Boys' High School was founded in 1881. We are a traditional boys' school with 80 of our boys living in our school hostel. As the longest established school in our city we are proud of our history, our traditions and our alumni. The school is set on 23 acres, surrounded by the picturesque hills of the city and is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre.
We currently have nearly 1200 students at the school including between 20-30 international students from Europe, Asia, North and South America and the Pacific Islands. International students have been coming to our school for 15 years and we have developed an extensive programme and support network for our students from around the world. The Director of International Students is available 24 hours a day to deal with student, agent and family queries and we have a homestay manager based at the school.
International Students are able to study a full academic programme in the areas of Languages, Sciences, Mathematics, The Arts, Business, Social Sciences, Technology and Physical Education. In addition we run an ESOL programme for students who require support with their English language.
We actively encourage International students to participate in extracurricular activities. These include music; orchestra, choir and rock bands, sport; athletics, sailing, rugby, soccer, hockey, volleyball, basketball and many others. Many of our students represent the school in their chosen sports. International students also take part in regular sporting and social events with students from Whangarei Girls' High School including camping and skiing trips.
The majority of our International students stay with carefully chosen New Zealand families in a supportive and caring environment. Some are accommodated in the school hostel where they have access to all the school facilities and hostel staff who monitor students' private study time.
