Glendowie College was established in 1961 and has a tradition of providing quality education in the pursuit of academic, cultural and sporting excellence. The College's restricted roll (920 students) promotes self-discipline, high standards of behaviour in a caring, pleasant, safe and secure environment. We welcome international students and value the contribution these students make to the multicultural character of our College.
Location and Features
Set in spacious tree-lined grounds close to Auckland city centre, harbours, beaches, bush walks, swimming facilities, golf courses and other amenities, the College offers modern teaching facilities and equipment. Teaching staff are highly qualified and dedicated to assuring student success.
Academic Excellence
Glendowie College has a proud record of academic achievement, with external examination results well above the national average. We achieved the top overall result in the 2000 University Entrance, Bursaries and Scholarship examinations.
We offers a wide range of national curriculum subjects including English as a Second Language (ESOL), English, French, German, Japanese, accounting, mathematics, science, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, economics, classical studies, graphics, technology, computer courses, art, music, drama, physical education, health, outdoor education, human development and life skills. Graduates leave the college with excellent opportunities for gaining recognised degrees and diplomas at tertiary institutions.
The College limits class sizes to provide maximum teacher-student contact opportunities.
Activities Programme
Music, Drama, and Debating are strong features of the school, with individual musical instrument instruction available and musical performance groups (jazz band, orchestra, ensemble groups, choirs and school productions) open for all who wish to participate. Students are encouraged to participate in the full range of sports and outdoor activities offered. Students can participate in regional and national sporting events and enjoy a great deal of success in competitive sport.
English Language
Evidence of English Language proficiency is an enrolment requirement. Small group tuition is provided for international students for whom English is a second language by trained and specialist teaching staff. Students are mainstreamed and study other subjects. Senior students are prepared for the IELTS examination, a requirement for entry to New Zealand universities.
Student Welfare
The Director together with Deans of each year level, provide student support in all pastoral care matters. This includes enrolment, orientation, academic programmes, insurance, extra care (guardianship) and homestay service arrangements. Regular contact is made with extra care and homestays. Glendowie College is a signatory to the New Zealand Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.
Accommodation
Homestay accommodation with a caring, local family costs NZ $300 for placement and $190 per week (payable 48 weeks in advance).
Fees
The annual tuition fee is NZ $14,000 (including GST), payable in advance. Medical, travel and personal property insurance (NZ$615) as well as extra care (guardianship) (NZ$1,440) are conditions of enrolment.
