Location and Facilities
Auckland Grammar is an inner city school, close to motorways and railway. Located in the central Auckland suburb of Epsom on 16 hectares of land. The facilities include an auditorium, artificial hockey turf, astroturf tennis courts, heated swimming pool, numerous sports fields, two gymnasia, music suite, library and two computer laboratories. Grammar has its own outdoor education centre at Ohakune which is 30 minutes from the skifields on Mt Ruapehu.
Academic Programmes
The curriculum of subjects include: Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Classical Studies, Economics, English, French, Geography, Graphics, History, History of Art, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, Maths (Calculus and Statistics), Music, Physics, Practical Art, Physical Education, Design and Technology.
Special Features
The school encourages all students to achieve their best at all levels. Classes are streamed according to academic ability with advanced classes offered at every level. International students are provided with English language support.
Extracurricular Programme
A huge range of opportunities is available to students in culture and sports. The range is always expanding to meet the needs and interests of students. Activities include: chess, debating, drama, electronics, film studies, journalism, music, photography, singing and traditional dancing from Maori, Samoan and Tongan cultures. The sporting activities are: aikido, badminton, basketball, canoeing, cricket, cycling, fencing, harriers, hockey, parachuting, rowing, rugby, scuba diving, soccer, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlons, waterpolo, weightlifting, wrestling, yachting.
Special Relations with Overseas Schools and Students
Auckland Grammar has established links with schools in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, UK, USA and Canada. Exchange students and school groups from these countries are often hosted by Auckland Grammar every year.
Student Welfare
The Director of International Students in conjunction with the English Language Support staff, oversees the welfare and academic progress of all International Students. A full time guidance counsellor is also available for support.
Accommodation
Tibbs House, the school hostel, accommodates 125 students, including some international students. Assistance with homestay accommodation is provided with selected New Zealand families.
English Language Entry Requirements
International Students are tested for English Language proficiency and some students may be required to complete an intensive course of English language before starting at Auckland Grammar School.
English Language Support
Qualified ESOL teachers provide support for all international students, as well as preparation for the IELTS examination.
Fees 2004
Annual tuition fees are NZ$18,000 plus NZ$500 application fee.
