New Zealand International PhD Scholars Selected

Monday, 12 October 2009

The 2009 NZIDRS recipients were chosen at a selection meeting in Wellington on October 1.

With the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships limited to ten recipients this year from a previous offering of 38 per year, the competition was extremely tough. Education New Zealand received a total of 328 applications, so the selection panel had a very difficult job.

Three of the offers went to Canadian students, three to German students, two to UK students, and one offer each went to students from the US and Malaysia. Recipients of the NZIDRS are selected entirely on academic merit.

The students and their subject areas and intended NZ universities are as follows:
Carol M. FROST – University of Canterbury (Entomology)
Cosmin LASLAU – University of Auckland (Chemistry)
Owen VALLIS – Victoria University of Wellington (Music)
Susanne C. KREJCEK – Victoria University of Wellington (Biological Sciences)
Sebastian REICHAU – University of Canterbury (Chemistry)
Jessica TERRUHN – University of Auckland (Sociology)
Andrew FILMER – Victoria University of Wellington (Music)
Emma HORSFIELD – University of Auckland (Pharmacy)
Thomas R. ETHERINGTON – University of Auckland (Geography)
Gregory P DE PASCALE – University of Canterbury (Physical Geography and Geology)

The students have until November 13 to confirm their acceptance of the scholarship, however three of the recipients have already confirmed. A reserve list of six additional candidates has been assembled in case any of the offers are declined.
