Malaysian alumni of the University of Canterbury are generously supporting the university's Malaysian Scholarship Fund.
(via The Star Online) The University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, hopes to raise at least NZ$100,000 (RM232,573) for its Malaysian Scholarship Fund.
The fund now stands at NZ$28,300 (RM65,816) through the generosity of about 1,000 of its Malaysian alumni, the university’s chancellor, Dr Robin Mann, said recently when he came on a two-day visit to Malaysia to promote tertiary education in the university.
Since the initiation of the scholarship fund last year, there has only been one recipient of the annual undergraduate fee scholarship which amounted to NZ$4,000 (RM9,307).
”We hope to raise more funds so that we can offer aid to more students,” Dr Mann told reporters after calling on Daniel Ngieng, the deputy chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council in Sarawak.
According to Dr Mann, Malaysians make up the fourth largest foreign student population in New Zealand, after students from China, the United States and Germany.
“Every year, we have about 200 students from Malaysia furthering their studies in New Zealand,” he said.
The university, which was established in 1873 and is the second oldest in New Zealand, has had some very successful collaborations.
“A number of joint patents have been developed on chemical compounds with the potential to fight diseases such as cancer. The university is also the first in the southern hemisphere to acquire the new BlueFern IBM Blue Gene super-computer technology,” said Dr Mann.
This has significantly enhanced its capability to carry out research in areas such as blood flow modelling which may help to determine the source of debilitating strokes, he added.
