Your Story Begins Here. Waiariki Institute of Technology is a tertiary education facility (or Polytechnic) in the Waiariki Rohe (Bay of Plenty). We have five schools of study, a wānanga, an academy of singing and music and a sports academy. Our mission is to increase the education and therefore, the contribution, prosperity and health of our region.

The campus is surrounded by green pastures, native trees and forest with easy links to free bus services, and the centre of town. Students enjoy the campus life and facilities of the library, language laboratory, open-access computer rooms, Wi-Fi, mix with local students, sports centre, cafe, restaurant, prayer room, childcare centre and Tangatarua Marae.

Waiariki is a Government owned public institution. It is a signatory to the New Zealand Ministry of Education Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. It has qualifications which are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and have international
recognition.

Waiariki delivers applied learning at degree, diploma and certificate levels in technical, vocational and professional fields.

There are excellent employment opportunities for graduates.

Academic Programmes

Waiariki Institute of Technology specialises in the areas of Tourism and Hospitality Management; Commerce and Computer Science; Business Administration; Nursing, Health and Social Sciences; Forestry and Wood Technology; Visual Arts and Teaching. It also has an International English Language Centre for international students for whom English is a second language.

Degrees and diplomas are offered in all areas of specialisation. Students can progress from certificate programmes, to diploma programmes to bachelor degree programmes.

International Entry Requirements

English Language Courses*

Classes are available for beginners to advanced levels, and commence weekly during each semester.

English Competency for Mainstream Qualifications*

  • Entry requirements are assessed on IELTS results, the Waiariki Level Test, or other evidence of equivalent English language ability.
  • Entry requirements vary based on the NZQA level of the qualification:
  • Degrees and Level 7 and 8 qualifications must have an overall IELTS 6.0 or equivalent score; and
  • Certificates and diplomas below Level 7 must have an overall IELTS 5.5 or equivalent score.
  • Higher IELTS scores apply to some qualifications.

Academic Entry Requirements*

Applicants must be high school graduates with acceptable results in relevant subjects. Special conditions apply to some qualifications and to students under 18 years of age.

Student Services

International students are provided with a wide range of support services by the International Centre.
Each student on arrival is provided with a comprehensive orientation programme. Assistance is provided with homestay, visa applications, and study programme counselling.

All students are members of the Students Association. Students have access to all libraries and to computers in open access computer rooms. All international students are provided with their own email address for internal and external communications.

How much does it cost to live in Rotorua?

Rotorua is a less expensive city to live in compared to major cities like Auckland and Wellington. It is important that you are financially prepared for your stay in New Zealand. Some typical costs are (in NZ$):

  • Waiariki House
    Starting at $99 per week (contact International Centre for options)
  • Homestay
    $195 per week
  • Bus rides
    Free for Waiariki students, within Rotorua, seven days a week
  • Medical & travel insurance
    $507 per year, shorter periods will be less
  • Airport transfers
    Auckland airport shuttle $120, Rotorua airport, approx $25
  • One-time administration fee $150
  • Waiariki Community Recreation Centre fee (optional) $50 per year
  • Other costs
    If you are planning to live independently (not in a hostel or homestay), you should expect to incur the following approximate expenses, based on a per-week basis (in NZ$):
    Shared accommodation $90-150
    Rent for a one-bedroom flat $130-200
    Electricity and gas $25-40
    Food $60-80
    Also allow for other expenses such as telephone and entertainment.

Mainstream programmes commence February and July.
