Chilton Saint James School is situated in an attractive residential area within the city of Lower Hutt, ten minutes from the capital city Wellington and twenty minutes from the airport.

Special Character

Academic achievement is the prime focus of Chilton Saint James School. Small classes enable all teachers to know the students personally and to provide focused tuition. Junior classes have no more than 24 students and senior classes range from 8 to 22 students.

Facilities

Chilton Saint James School was founded in 1918. There are three computer suites containing up-to-date technology, specialist science laboratories, library with internet access, music suite, specialist art rooms, four dance studios, a modern gymnasium, theatre, fully established ESOL rooms, tennis courts, swimming pool and playing fields.

Academic Programme

Chilton Saint James successfully prepares students to enter university in New Zealand and overseas. The school offers the New Zealand curriculum at all levels. At senior level this includes; English, Accounting, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Dance, Drama, Economics, ESOL, French, Geography, German, History, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics and Spanish.

Extracurricular Programme

A full range of music, dance and sporting activitiesis available.

Accommodation

Chilton Saint James School manages a quality homestay programme. International students live with New Zealand families close to the school. The homestays provide a caring, comfortable environment and encourage the student to be a part of their family life. The home offers the student their own room, three meals a day, a place for study and all laundry and personal requirements are provided at no extra cost. The school maintains close contact with homestay families.

The International Student Programme

Caring staff oversee all aspects of the academic programme, enrolment, immigration requirements, homestay arrangements, the establishment of a bank account, insurance and guardianship requirements. The homestay manager arranges accommodation, monitors the homestay arrangements and personally collects students at the airport. The school maintains regular contact with the parents.

Programmes are arranged for international students to meet their individual goals and abilities. Students requiring extra English have a minimum of four hours a week at no extra cost.

Enrolment

International students are accepted from Year 7 to Year 13, age 11 to 18. Students may enter the school at any time during the first three terms of the academic year February to September. Students from Year 1 to Year 6 are accepted into the school on the condition that they reside with a guardian whilst in New Zealand.

Senior students must have good spoken and written English. Junior students will be given every assistance to learn the English language. Chilton Saint James School limits the number of places available.
