High Quality of New Zealand Education Confirmed
Thursday, 9 December 2010
“New Zealand schools provide students with a high quality, well rounded education. We have always known this, but the results of the 2009 PISA assessment have shown that New Zealand is among the world’s best,” says Robert Stevens, Chief Executive of Education New Zealand.
PISA, which is the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment, measures the abilities of students in 65 countries every three years. New Zealand has always placed well above the OECD average in the results.
Of the OECD countries, New Zealand placed among the top four country results for reading and science, and among the top eight for mathematics.
“Our students fared considerably better than those in the US or the UK. We can confidently say that for an English language education, you can’t do much better than New Zealand,” says Robert Stevens.
The PISA assessment tests students who are 15 years old. The subjects of reading, mathematical and scientific literacy are covered not merely in terms of mastery of the school curriculum, but in terms of important knowledge and skills needed in adult life.
“New Zealand schools provide an excellent knowledge base for students to prepare them for further study and for working life. In addition to literacy and numeracy, our schools teach students about problem solving, working together, and finding innovative ways to approach tasks. We also offer a wide range of subjects in schools to give students every opportunity to learn skills that will broaden their horizons and give them more choices for their tertiary studies,” says Robert Stevens.
New Zealand’s school system includes both single sex and co-educational schools. International students can choose to enrol in state schools, private schools, and integrated schools which are funded both publicly and privately.
