Guide to New Zealand Cross credits and exemptions

Cross credits and exemptions

If you have studied towards a qualification in your home country you may be able to have those papers or courses credited towards your New Zealand qualification. The Qualifications Evaluation Service can assess your incomplete qualification.

Cross credits

You can get credit for prior study towards your course in New Zealand. If you have done the first year of a course in your own country you may be able to go straight into the second year in New Zealand. Talk to your institution about which courses can be cross-credited.

The process will be easy if your previous study was in an English-speaking country or one of the other countries acknowledged by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) or the Australian National Office of Skills Recognition (NOOSR).

If not, it may simply be a matter of providing the faculty department with a detailed description of the course you have studied so far.

Exemption assessments

It may be necessary for the Qualifications Evaluation Service at NZQA to assess your incomplete qualification. The fee is NZ$450 and the process takes up to
8 weeks.

You will have to provide certified photocopies or, in some cases, the original documents. You may also need translations from an NZQA-approved translation agency. In certain circumstances, the assessment may be ‘fast-tracked’ so it won't take so long.
