WOW - NZ Polytechnics & Institutes of Technology in the Arts Spotlight
Monday, 6 October 2008
One of New Zealand's most popular annual events has a lot of help behind the scenes from hard-working students.
The annual "Montana World of Wearable Arts" (WoW) competition has become one of the most spectactular and anticipated events of the year in New Zealand.
In its twentieth year, the show takes place in Wellington and features astounding works of art which are all worn by models. The show was born in Nelson, on New Zealand's South Island, but eventually became too popular for the smaller city to host. It moved to Wellington in 2005, and now attracts 35,000 people to its sold-out shows over 10 days each year.
Several of New Zealand's polytechnics and institutes of technology use this opportunity to give their students real-world experience. Whitireia Community Polytechnic had four entries from Bachelor of Applied Arts students accepted into this year's competition.
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology has been involved in the event for ten years, with staff and students from the hairdressing department getting models ready for the stage. Weltec (Wellington Institute of Technology) also pitches in, with students from their schools of Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Make-up Artistry taking part in the event.
New Zealand's Polytechnics and institutes of Technology are known for providing a practical education to help students transition easily into working in their fields of study. Taking advantage of events like WoW is just one example of how this hands-on approach to education can benefit students.
