It is in the interest of New Zealanders that all our schools are of a relatively similar standard, so that students, no matter where they are in the country, receive quality learning. For this reason, it can be difficult for agents and international students to choose a school. However, there are a number of criteria that can be used to make a choice:
• Location
• School Type (primary/intermediate, secondary-government, secondary private, single sex/co-educational)
• Number of students at the school.
Schools have their own websites and all have information / marketing materials they are happy to send.
See www.newzealandeducated.com – search Institution Type
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) provides details of all registered schools. This information includes what courses the school is accredited to deliver and if it is a signatory to the Code of Practice. See www.nzqa.govt.nz/providers/index.do
Information on all New Zealand schools is also available online through Te Kete Ipurangi (TKI) – The Online Learning centre www.tki.org.nz. Through this website, students can search for schools by region, schools by type or specific schools. Basic details will be displayed, including size of school, type of school, decile rating, location and contact information.
This website includes all schools, not just those that enrol international students.
Every 3, 4 or 5 years (depending on the school’s past reviews) schools are reviewed by the Education Review Office (ERO). This review produces an ERO report which will comment on some areas of the school curriculum, general performance and may make recommendations for improvement. ERO reports are available to anyone interested and can be viewed at www.ero.govt.nz. Through this website, you can search for individual schools and read their latest ERO report.
All schools that have signed the Code of Practice are listed on the Ministry of Education website – www.minedu.govt.nz
