New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS)

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand (ENZ).  The scholarship programme aims to share New Zealand’s excellent education system with international post graduate researchers, bringing the best academics from around the world to share their knowledge with New Zealand.

Since inception in 2004, 196 international doctoral scholars have been awarded scholarship funding via the programme with 3000+ applications submitted overall.

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) are open to all international students who meet the eligibility criteria.  Scholarships include:

•    full tuition fees for 3 years (36 months) of full-time doctoral study
•    living allowance of NZ$20,500 per year
•    up to NZ$600 annual health insurance allowance
•    NZ$2000 travel allowance (across the 3 years) for conference attendance and field research
•    NZ$800 book and thesis allowance (across the 3 years)
•    NZ$500 one-off establishment allowance – conditions apply

Additional funds are not available to support dependents.

Applications close on the 15th of July each year, for a limited number of up to 10 places.  On a year when the 15th falls on a weekend, the deadline shifts to the following Monday evening.  These scholarships are highly regarded and very popular – 325 applications were received in 2010.  Only very top academic scholars will be awarded a place.

Evidence that academic supervision is available is an important part of applying for this scholarship.  Applicants will need to contact the relevant university departments and/or follow university instructions in order to confirm that academic supervision is available before making application for the NZIDRS.  Full eligibility criteria are set out in the terms and conditions document:
