If a student has been granted work rights by Immigration New Zealand, they will be able to apply for jobs while studying. A good place to ask for help to find jobs is the International Help Centre at their tertiary provider.
Student Job Search is a national organisation that helps students find work. International students are able to use Student Job Search. Many providers have Student Job Search Branches on campus. They also can give advice on money matters, applying for jobs and working with computers. See www.sjs.co.nz
The minimum wage in New Zealand is currently (2011) $13 per hour. For jobs such as working in a restaurant or bar, or doing manual labour, students can expect to earn about NZ$13 to $15 an hour, before tax.
The adult minimum wage applies to all employees aged 16 and over who are not new entrants or trainees – the only exception is when an employee holds an exemption permit. There is also a new entrants minimum wage for employees aged 16-17 and a training minimum wage for employees aged 16 and over (both currently $10.40 per hour). There is no minimum wage for employees who are under 16 years old.
