Health and Character

Health

Health requirements depend on how long the student will be in New Zealand.

Students staying in New Zealand for between 6 months and 1 year may need to provide a completed Temporary Entry X-ray Certificate (NZIS Form 1096) to show they do not have tuberculosis (TB).  This will apply to students who are from or have spent a total of 3 months in the past 5 years in a country not listed as a low incidence TB country.

Students will need to make an appointment to see a doctor, to request a referral to a radiologist for a chest x-ray.  They will need to take the Temporary Entry X-ray Certificate to the radiologist for completion.  This Certificate plus their chest x-ray plate will need to be attached to the visa application form.

Students studying in New Zealand for more than 1 year will need to complete a medical examination and a medical and x-ray certificate.

Note:  Pregnant women and children under the age of 11 years are not required to submit x-ray certificates unless a special report is required.

Medical certificates must not be more than 3 months old at the time they are submitted to INZ with the application.

For full details on INZ health requirements and to download Medical Forms, go to www.immigration.govt.nz and click on Forms and Guides.  There is a list of forms to choose from, including the Health Requirements Leaflet (NZIS 1121).  This Leaflet includes a list of low incidence TB countries (see page 4).

Police Certificates

Students who plan to study in New Zealand for more than 2 years will be required to include a Certificate of Good Conduct / Police Certificate from their country of citizenship and from any country they have lived for 5 or more years since 17 years of age.

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old at the time they are submitted to INZ with the application.

To find out how to obtain a Police Certificate, go to www.immigration.govt.nz and click on Forms and Guides.  Choose Police Certificate from the list displayed.  The student can then select their specific country.
